Cambodia experienced remarkable growth in air travel in 2024, with a total of 6.24 million air passengers, marking a 22% increase compared to the previous year. According to Sinn Chanserey Vutha, a secretary of state at the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, the growth reflects a resurgence in both international and domestic travel.
The kingdom’s three international airports handled 58,354 flights last year, a 14% rise year-on-year. Additionally, air cargo volume surged by 40%, reaching 77,752 tons, further highlighting Cambodia’s expanding aviation sector.
Steady Growth in Air Travel
The surge in air travelers and flights underscores Cambodia’s recovery in tourism and trade following the pandemic. The growing demand for air travel has been fueled by both leisure and business travelers, particularly from neighboring countries.
The significant rise in air cargo volume also indicates strengthening economic activity. Exports and imports through air freight have seen steady growth, driven by increasing trade partnerships.
Siem Reap Angkor International Airport Boosts Connectivity
The Chinese-invested Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, operational since November 2023, has positioned Cambodia as a key travel hub in Southeast Asia. Equipped with a 3,600-meter-long runway, the 4E-level international airport can accommodate almost all types of aircraft.
“Siem Reap Angkor International Airport is expected to attract new international airlines and boost direct flights to Siem Reap province,” said Chanserey Vutha. The province is home to the world-famous Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The airport’s advanced infrastructure and strategic location are set to enhance Cambodia’s tourism appeal and promote economic growth.
Future Prospects
Cambodia’s aviation sector is poised for continued expansion, supported by infrastructure upgrades and government efforts to strengthen connectivity. Officials remain optimistic about welcoming more international travelers, especially from China, as global travel recovers.
Cambodia’s robust growth in air travel and cargo highlights its recovery momentum and the pivotal role of new infrastructure like Siem Reap Angkor International Airport. With enhanced connectivity and growing interest from international airlines, the kingdom is well-positioned to strengthen its tourism and trade sectors in the coming years.
