On February 10, 2025, Bangladesh’s interim government started a financial aid program for victims of the July 2024 uprising. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus led the initiative. At a ceremony in Dhaka, he handed cheques to families of 21 martyrs and seven injured individuals.
Several key officials attended the event. Advisers Faruk E Azam (Liberation War Affairs), Nurjahan Begum (Health), and Nahid Islam (Information and Broadcasting) were present. Special Assistant Professor Dr. Md Sayedur Rahman also joined them. The program aimed to support those affected and acknowledge their sacrifices.
Financial Aid Details
The government has designated those who lost their lives in the uprising as “July Martyrs” and the injured as “July Fighters.” Each martyr’s family will receive a one-time financial grant of Tk30 lakh, disbursed in two installments: Tk10 lakh through national savings bonds in the fiscal year 2024-2025 and Tk20 lakh in the fiscal year 2025-2026. Additionally, these families will receive a monthly allowance of Tk20,000. Employable members of the martyrs’ families will be given priority in government and semi-government job placements.
For the injured, benefits are categorized based on the severity of injuries. Seriously injured individuals (Category A) will receive a one-time payment of Tk5 lakh, with Tk2 lakh provided in fiscal year 2024-2025 and Tk3 lakh in 2025-2026. They will also receive a monthly allowance of Tk20,000, lifelong medical facilities in government hospitals, and access to medical services both domestically and abroad upon medical board recommendations. Training and rehabilitation facilities will be provided as needed.
Those with less severe injuries (Category B) will receive a one-time allowance of Tk3 lakh, disbursed as Tk1 lakh in fiscal year 2024-2025 and Tk2 lakh in 2025-2026. They will also receive a monthly allowance of Tk15,000, necessary training, and priority in government or semi-government job placements.
Government Recognition and Future Plans
The government has released a gazette listing 834 martyrs from the July uprising. Officials have also prepared a list of the injured and will publish it soon. They will distribute identity cards to martyrs’ families and injured individuals to help them access the promised benefits.
Information Adviser Nahid Islam admitted that assistance took longer than expected. He stated, “We know you wished for faster action, but we were always sincere in our efforts.” He reassured that the interim government remains committed to honoring the July heroes despite facing many challenges during the crisis.
This initiative is a major step in supporting those affected by the July 2024 uprising. The government plans to offer financial aid, medical care, and job opportunities. These efforts aim to recognize their sacrifices and help victims and their families rebuild their lives.
