Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in Beijing on Thursday, 06 February, marking the 50th anniversary of China-Thailand diplomatic relations. Both leaders emphasized deepening strategic cooperation and enhancing bilateral ties for regional stability and economic growth.
Xi highlighted the “Golden Jubilee of China-Thailand Friendship,” urging both nations to build on past achievements. He stressed the importance of strengthening mutual trust and supporting each other in the face of global uncertainties. “The stability and certainty of China-Thailand relations should counter external uncertainties,” he stated.
China and Thailand agreed to align development strategies and expand mutually beneficial cooperation. A significant part of the discussion centered around the China-Thailand Railway, a flagship project aimed at boosting connectivity between China, Laos, and Thailand.
Xi expressed China’s readiness to accelerate these projects and promote broader economic integration. “We aim to make the interconnected development of China, Laos, and Thailand more fruitful as soon as possible,” he noted.
Both leaders also explored collaboration in digital economy and new energy vehicle industries to strengthen industrial and supply chain stability.
Crackdown on Online Crimes and Security Cooperation
China praised Thailand’s stringent measures against online gambling and telecom fraud. Xi emphasized continued security collaboration to ensure the safety of citizens and regional stability. “Both nations must enhance law enforcement cooperation to protect lives and property,” he said.
Paetongtarn reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to tackling transnational crimes. “Thailand is determined to work with China and neighboring countries to crack down on online fraud and gambling,” she stated. The discussion underscored the importance of judicial cooperation to maintain order and security in the region.
Celebrating Five Decades of Friendship and Cooperation
Both leaders agreed to host various cultural and diplomatic activities to commemorate their 50-year-long relationship. China also recognized Thailand’s active role as co-chair of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation and welcomed the country as a new BRICS partner.
Paetongtarn reaffirmed Thailand’s adherence to the one-China policy and its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. She emphasized the importance of cooperation in trade, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges. “Thailand looks forward to ushering in the next five decades of shared peace and prosperity,” she said.
China and Thailand also pledged to work together in global forums, defending international systems based on the United Nations framework and international law. Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to enhancing unity within the Global South, promoting development, and safeguarding world peace.
