Chief Advisor Prof. Muhammad Yunus has assured British parliamentarian Rupa Huq that the upcoming general election in Bangladesh will be conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
During a meeting held at the state guest house Jamuna in Dhaka, Prof. Yunus highlighted the urgent need to restore public trust in the country’s democratic processes. He pointed out the challenges faced in previous elections. “The people were deprived of their voting rights in the last three elections,” he stated. “There was a fake parliament, fake MPs, and a fake speaker. Now, the country has regained its voice,” he added.
Prof. Yunus also discussed two possible timelines for the upcoming election. The election could take place either in December 2025 or in mid-2026. He emphasized that the final date would depend on the successful implementation of ongoing reforms. “Reforms are essential to ensuring free and fair elections,” he explained.
A Turning Point for Democracy
Prof. Yunus reflected on the mass uprising in July 2024, which led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. He described this event as a transformative period for the nation. “July was a turning point when the people demanded democratic governance and accountability,” he remarked.
British MP Rupa Huq shared her optimism about Bangladesh’s progress. She expressed her encouragement by saying, “I am really encouraged by seeing the new Bangladesh.” Huq confirmed her plans to return and observe the next general election, which shows the growing international interest in Bangladesh’s democratic journey.
Huq’s visit coincided with a trip by a UK business delegation to Bangladesh. This delegation was led by UKBCCI Chairman Iqbal Ahmed OBE and President M G Moula Mia. During their visit, they engaged in discussions with Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi and BIDA Chairman Ashik Mahmud Chowdhury. The focus of these discussions was on trade and investment opportunities in Bangladesh. Siddiqi invited British entrepreneurs, especially those of Bangladeshi origin, to invest in the country. He highlighted the interim government’s reform agenda as a key incentive for investment.
Building Confidence Through Transparency
Since taking office in August 2024, Prof. Yunus has made fostering inclusivity and transparency in governance a top priority. His administration has implemented significant reforms to address the demands raised during the mass uprising and to restore democratic processes.
“The interim government is committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people,” Prof. Yunus declared. “Our reforms are designed to ensure a transparent, participatory, and credible electoral process,” he added.
Meanwhile, the UK delegation’s engagement with Bangladeshi officials underscored the country’s potential as a growing hub for trade and investment. Key figures in the business community expressed confidence in the interim government’s vision for economic progress.
Prof. Yunus’s strong commitment to ensuring free and fair elections marks a significant step in Bangladesh’s democratic revival. With the interim government focusing on reforms and international collaboration, the nation is poised to reclaim its reputation as a democratic and economically vibrant state.
The active involvement of global stakeholders, such as the UK business community, further highlights Bangladesh’s potential for stability and growth. As the country prepares for its next general election, these developments signal a defining moment in its journey toward democratic and economic renewal.
