A shocking ragging incident has emerged at a government nursing college in Kottayam, Kerala. Senior students tortured first-year students in extreme ways. They forced them to strip naked and physically abused them with dumbbells.
Police arrested five third-year students after three first-year students filed complaints. The authorities registered the case under the Anti-Ragging Act. The victims said the abuse had been going on since November 2024.
Disturbing Acts of Violence and Extortion
The victims described the unimaginable torture their seniors subjected them to. They had to stand naked while seniors hung dumbbells from their private parts. Seniors also used sharp objects, like compasses, to inflict deep wounds.
They made the victims apply lotion to their wounds, worsening their pain. Victims had to smear cream on their faces and inside their mouths. If they resisted, seniors threatened them with severe consequences.
The abuse didn’t stop there. Every Sunday, seniors extorted money from the juniors and forced them to buy alcohol. After drinking, they assaulted the first-year students, worsening their suffering.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
The unbearable situation forced the three victims to file a complaint at Kottayam Gandhinagar police station. After investigating the matter, authorities arrested five third-year students. The accused will be presented before a court on Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities have stressed that ragging is a serious offense. They promised strict actions against those involved. This case shows the need for better enforcement of anti-ragging laws and more awareness in schools and colleges.
Urgent Call for Action Against Bullying
This incident follows a tragic case in Kochi, where a 14-year-old boy died by suicide. His family blamed bullying at school for the heartbreaking event. In response, Kerala’s General Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, instructed the Director of General Education (DGE) to carry out a full investigation.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shared his deep concern about bullying and ragging in schools. He emphasized the need to raise awareness about the severe effects of bullying. Gandhi stressed that schools should focus on addressing this issue with seriousness and urgency.
“Bullying isn’t harmless; it destroys lives. Parents must teach kindness, love, empathy, and the courage to speak up. Believe your child if they say they are being bullied, and intervene if they are the bully,” Gandhi stated.
This incident highlights the urgent need for effective anti-ragging policies, strict monitoring, and accountability in schools. We must ensure that students’ safety and well-being remain a top priority in educational institutions.
